During this campaign, five neotropical felid species (side) were submitted to a complete check-up. Anaesthetized for only 30 minutes (average), it was long enough to collect blood and hair samples, parasites, check for physiological parameters and get mucous SWABs. A team of 15 professionals from three institutions: Wildlife Refuge of vets and staff from ITAIPU Binacional, students and professors from Veterinary Medicine Department, Federal University of Paraná, and wildlife biologists and trainees from the NGO Reserva Brasil, managed to check 57 cats within three working days, averaging 19 felids per day. The general objective of this campaign was to assess the general and odontological conditions of these animals and also, look for endo- and ecto-parasites. Being kept in captivity, these animals present all kinds of stress-related somatic reactions, e.g. hair loss, appetite loss, cutaneous wounds, infertility, etc. During the campaign, all wounds were treated and, whenever needed, teeth were cleaned.

Biometric measurements were collected in order to increase our knowledge of these species, among which some are poorly known (oncilla, margay). A hundred and fourteen outlines were drawn from the cats’ fore and rear feet using a clear plastic board. This should support the elaboration of educational material and should also be used in footprint field guides. Routine checking is required to maintain animals in good conditions while in captivity. They represent a unique opportunity for such collaborative efforts to be done. Institutions and professionals should join forces for a better knowledge these magnificent animals thus promoting their conservation. Example to be followed!
